OFFICIALS TRYING TO
I.D. WOMAN KILLED IN FIERY MERCER COUNTY CRASH
Mercer County accident scene
By late Wednesday
night, Mercer County officials were still trying to identify a woman killed in
a fiery single vehicle crash from earlier in the day.
JUNE 24, 2015
MERCER COUNTY, KY
The wreck happened on Bohon Road near Mt. Pleasant Road, just outside of Harrodsburg. Both lanes of Bohon Road were shut down for hours, after investigators said a woman somehow lost control of her car.
"Here she comes over the hill, and she was running better than 55 (mph). And then I start back weed eating, and I heard a big POW," said Kevin Sallee.
Sallee was doing yard work when a horrible scene unfolded feet away, at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Mercer County Sheriff's Department said a young woman driving a Chevy Impala somehow lost control of the car in front of a bridge.
"She hit the guardrail before you get to the bridge, and I happened to turn around and she was headed to the others side of the bridge," said Sallee.
Sallee said the woman was speeding and nearly missed an oncoming car, before over-correcting once again and hitting a tree head on. At that point witnesses said the car quickly went up in flames and there wasn't much they could do to help.
"It just starts smoking real bad, and I said, oh please get her out," said Sallee.
Witnesses drenched the car with water, however they couldn't stop the fire. While emergency crews did their best when they arrived, it was sadly too late.
"It's just terrible for her, for the family," said Jacob Long, who lives nearby.
Neighbors, such as Long, heard the news as they took detours home to avoid the closed stretch of the road.
"He said the accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. I believe. And I pulled up at around 4 p.m. and traffic was still having to be redirected," said Long.
It's an area where Salle said he has seen his share of bad crashes. As he continues doing yard work near the road, he hopes this will be the last bad accident that happens.
"They need to slow down on this road," said Sallee.
The Mercer County Sheriff's Department said it's too early to know if there were other contributing factors in the crash.

Sumter chain
reaction crash
A Summerfield woman
was killed Tuesday and nine people were injured after a chain-reaction crash on
Interstate 75 in Sumter County.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24,
2015
BUSHNELL, FLORIDA
Authorities have
identified a Summerfield woman who was killed Tuesday when her Mercury Sable
was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer in a crash that left both vehicles on fire
along Interstate 75.
Cynthia Wimmer, 58,
died at the scene in a chain-reaction crash that had traffic backed up for 8
miles, according to Florida Highway Patrol report released Wednesday.
Nine other people
received minor injuries.
Five of the injured
were local residents in a car and camper struck by the same tractor-trailer
that rear-ended Wimmer. They were identified as the Mangan family of The
Villages — Connie, 68, Joseph, 68, Madeline, 10, Avery, 6, and family friend
Kennedy Raine, 6.
According to a
preliminary FHP report, the tractor-trailer was hauling oranges sou th on I-75
when it came upon idle traffic that was being diverted off the interstate due
to a previous crash under the Exit 309 overpass.
The truck driver,
Richard Holland, 52, of Villa Rica, Ga., failed to stop for the traffic and
rear-ended Wimmer’s Sable, the FHP report states. His rig rolled on top of her
car and both vehicles veered into the wood line and erupted in flames.
Holland’s tractor
trailer continued to roll and collided with the Mangan family’s Toyota Camry,
driven by Connie. The rig then struck another vehicle, a GMC Si erra, and
jackknifed.
The driver of the
Sierra, Brenda Lipply, 48, and three of her passengers, all of Tallahassee,
also sustained minor injuries. All Lipply family members, John, 56, Jordyn, 13,
and Sydney, 12, were taken to Bayfront Health Brooksville.
Holland, as well as
the driver of a fifth vehicle involved in the crash, were not injured.
According to Leland
Greek, Sumter County fire chief, seven trucks responded and it took
firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
It is not clear why
Holland didn’t slow down.
“(The) crash
occurred on a straight and level roadway,” said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, FPH
spokesman for Sumter County.
The crash remains
under investigation.
Wimmer was the
second person killed in a Sumter crash on Tuesday who was identified Wednesday.
A 52-year-old pedestrian was killed Tuesday after he was struck by a car near
I-75.
Velija Ascic of St.
Louis, Missouri, died at the scene. That crash occurred in Wildwood about 10:30
p.m.
According to the
FHP, Ascic was attempting to cross State Road 44 near I-75 from the north. As
he entered the outside westbound lane, he was hit by a Nissan Altima.
The driver,
24-year-old Jalisa Shuntel Jones of Ocala, was taken to Citrus Memorial
Hospital with minor injuries.
The crash remains
under investigation.

TWO KIDS KILLED, 4
OTHER CRITICALLY INJURED BY DRIVER FLEEING COPS IN DETROIT, POLICE SAY
Two children were
killed in Detroit Wednesday and three other kids were injured when a driver
allegedly hit them with a car while fleeing police, authorities said.
Detroit Police Chief
James Craig said the police pursuit began at around 8 p.m. and only lasted
about 75 seconds before the Chevrolet Camaro fatally struck the two children
and then hit three other kids and an adult.
"The speed was
such that once the officers initiated their overhead lights, they lost sight of
this vehicle because of the speed," Craig told reporters. "What they
did see was a plume of smoke; they believed it was an accident. … Once they
responded to that location, they saw the two children lying in the
street."
Officers tried to
render aid to the two children but the kids, identified by NBC station WDIV as
Michael Angelo Jackson, 7, and Makiah Jackson, 3, were unresponsive and they
were rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Three other children
and an adult were struck by the Camaro and were being treated at an area
hospital for serious injuries. Both suspects inside the car were in custody,
authorities told the station.
The chase began when
officers spotted a handgun inside the car, police told WDIV.

2 kids killed, 4
others injured by suspect fleeing from Detroit PD on city's east side
3 kids critically
injured, being treated at local hospital
JUNE 24, 2015
DETROIT, MI
Police say two
children, ages 3 and 7, were killed and three more children, ages 3, 5 and 7,
were critically injured Wednesday night when they were hit by a suspect fleeing
police in a Camaro on Nottingham Road near Warren Avenue on Detroit's east
side.
A 23-year-old woman
was also injured when she was hit by the Camaro.
Police Chief James
Craig said officers saw the occupants of a 'late model Camaro' at the corner of
Chatsworth Street and Cornwall Street at around 8 p.m. Officers say one of the
suspects had a handgun. When they saw the officers, the suspects drove off at a
high speed, getting up to 70 or 80 mph.
Officers turned on
the overhead lights in the squad car, but the Camaro didn't stop.
"At some point
during the very brief pursuit, two children were struck by the suspect's
vehicle," Craig said. "They were pronounced deceased at the
hospital."
The two kids who
were hit were siblings Michael Angelo Jackson, 7, and Makiah Jackson, 3. They
are pictured above.
Craig said the
Camaro then hit three other children and an adult at the spot where the chase
ended, which was in the 5200 block of Nottingham Road.
The car chase lasted
about 1 minute and 15 seconds. Craig said the Camaro was going so fast that
officers lost sight of it during the chase. After they lost sight of the
Camaro, officers saw a plume of smoke and responded to that scene.
When they arrived,
officers saw two kids laying in the street and tried to resuscitate them. When
the kids didn't respond, they were taken to the hospital in the police car.
"My
understanding, right now, is that there was initial contact with the first two
children, and then the Camaro continued, and then struck four additional
people: three more children and an adult," Craig said.
All six victims were
taken to St. John Hospital by police.
Both suspects from
the Camaro are in custody, authorities say. One of the suspects broke an arm
during the incident.
Police are unsure
whether or not the Camaro went up onto the sidewalk when it hit the children.
They are continuing to investigate the incident.
The family of the
kids who died has setup a GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral expenses.
